Amal's Story
When Amal* first came to us for counselling, she was carrying a heavy burden. Having recently arrived from an Arabic-speaking country, she was facing the terrifying prospect of becoming homeless. The fear and uncertainty had pushed her to the brink of despair.

In her first counselling session, it was clear that her housing crisis was preventing her from focusing on her emotional and psychological needs. Our counsellor’s first priority was to ensure Amal felt heard, understood and supported.

With the help of an interpreter, we contacted a local organisation which helps refugees and those seeking asylum in Northern Ireland. We connected Amal directly with someone who could provide practical housing advice. Within days, a letter to support her case was issued.

By her second counselling session, Amal felt more settled. With the housing crisis beginning to ease, she could focus on the deeper issues that had brought her to us. Over time, she began to see herself differently which helped to build her self-awareness, confidence, and resilience.

Today, Amal feels more confident reaching out to others. She has reconnected with her family, joined women’s groups, and participates in community activities. She’s even considering volunteering to help others who are struggling — turning her pain into a source of hope.
